A course to give participants the opportunity to understand why they behave as they do with different people and in different situations. It gives a range of ideas to apply in the development and growth of themselves and their communication skills.

Objectives

At the end of the course participants will know:

  • Why they behave as they do
  • That they have choice and are able to take action
  • The benefits of taking control of their attitude and directing it
  • How to change their attitude and behave in a more honest and confident manner
  • The ways to communicate initially and match the communication to the recipient
  • Situations where assertiveness is appropriate and be able to apply it
  • Ways to check their attitudinal projection in different situations
  • How to apply a positive approach and image when working with others

Content

Topics to include:

  • The underlying reasons for individual’s behaviour is examined
  • The idea of ‘unconsciousness’ behaviour is explored, what drives this and the implications for how we present ourselves
  • This leads to the proposition that we can take control of our lives and use ‘conscious’ behaviour to deliver a positive image
  • To change our attitudinal behaviour we need to appreciate ourselves more and feel good about our own values and beliefs. We start by examining the “four selves” that can exist and how they come across
  • Communication working in a verbal and non-verbal way is examined and the importance of congruency in dress, verbal and non-verbal communication
  • The barriers to communicating effectively, how develop active listening skills and to take control of the communication process.
  • The techniques of assertion and saying ‘no’ without feeling guilty.
  • Using assertiveness in difficult situations and choosing your approach.
  • Gaining co-operation and commitment.

Training Methods

The programme will be a highly interactive combination of formal content, workshop activities and individual exercises with opportunities coaching and confidential feedback. It will offer helpful frameworks for analysis and tools to be applied in the future.
